Almost An Adult

Teasing a soon-to-be-released mixtape with an auteurist and cinematic miniature movie is the boldness you’d expect from an artist like the emotive and ever-talented Jords. ‘Almost An Adult’ represents the Croydon-based rapper’s maturity through a stunningly visual and heartfelt love letter to the people and places that have made him the man he is. From the earthy and life-affirming vibrancy of Jamaica, which takes a dominant role in his story, to the crispy white crep-filled pavements of Dundee Rd, Jords invites us on his soulful R&B wave through his past, present and future.

In ‘Halos’, the first track of the film; with his laidback and pensive flow, Jords pens a sincere thank you and I miss you to his lost loved ones, who we meet in snippets through childhood footage. ’Mrs Chambers Kitchen 2’, alights the nostalgia further by sequeling the track off his 2016 EP, whilst ‘Rose-tinted glasses’, accompanied by South London’s soulstress Jaz Karis, is Jords’ opportunity to delve into a romance we’ve all been akin to.

Prefaced by a poetic soliloquy, it is in the final act where AAA delivers its biggest bang; the sound of Jords’ cultures synergising in ‘Patterned’. In this hip-hop bop, alongside fellow Croydon rapper Dotty, he rounds the homely narrative by signalling his intent of putting the mandem in mansions; family at his core.

Jords’ rite of passage mini-movie hybrid is a gift to 2020, as will his 10 track EP of the same name be when it drops 15th May.

Mad ting.
