Cheque On It

West London rapper and poet Life enlists the help of enigmatic underground rapper Lord Apex once again following their 2017 collaboration ‘Fix The Feeling’ to create an innovative, smooth and thoughtful track ‘Cheque On It’. 

Combining elements of R&B and jazz in a busy opening instrumental, the vocals sound fresh and tongue-in-cheek, with Life flowing over the beat comfortably. Apex follows with similar ease, the timbre of the instrumental fitting well with the tone of his voice. 

The instrumental switch midway through the song is executed with great skill and works effortlessly. It is at this point that Life really comes into his own, using thoughtful bars such as “I’ve been missing you since you moved to that new location / only thing I’m not missing is our miscommunication” over the breezy piano tinged beat. A very successful collaboration that is interesting sonically and narratively, there are definitely exciting things to come from both artists involved.
