Magic

Northampton’s slowthai continues to demonstrate why he is one of the most lauded and talked about artists in Britain with new track ‘Magic’. Working with one of the most exciting producers from across the pond, Kenny Beats, slowthai flaunts his signature tone and flows along with satirical, angry and highly innovative wordplay, leaving the listener feeling a whole range of emotions at the end of its short run time.

The boisterous bass and cultured drum kit carry the typically hard-hitting Kenny Beats instrumental, with slowthai producing an abrasive and sinister timbre, attacking the beat. This is a ferocious and proud slowthai, with lines like “council home/ now I own my home” an example of him using juxtaposition to articulate his pre-fame days compared to now. As is often the case with slowthai, this is an endearing and powerful song lyrically and vocally, and just the right amount of terrifying.

When 2 prolific artists combine, it is really not a surprise that the outcome is such a high octane, exciting and nuanced collaboration. I don’t know about anyone else, but I’d love a joint tape.
