Wholesome Goody

After bursting into the year with the explosive ‘DONE TALKING’, the artist/DJ continues to prove she’s on her own wave, with her debut EP ‘Wholesome Goody’. Coming onto our radars back in 2018 with her soulful-industrial debut ‘Matter of Fact / Not That Easy’, Elheist displayed a sound unparalleled to her peers, creating an amalgamation of her wide-ranging influence and making something wholly her own. Continuing to do so, this latest addition brings seven-tracks of her singular style and brave ideas.

Drawing us in, ‘ENTERPRISE REPRISE’ brings a stripped-back sound with low-key harmonies from Kelsey Lu and Lafawndah, focusing on her singular melodies. The production remains calm with a touch of cinematic atmosphere through small percussive details, making for a perfect introduction. Moving into the high-energy ‘DONE TALKING’, this track produced by Haich Ber Na alongside Elheist herself brings experimental, industrial-infused percussion with Elheist switching it up for a toned down bridge proving, as she states in the aforementioned track, ‘from early, you could never box me in’.

Continuing into ‘GOOD OVER EVIL’, bringing a more laid-back, electro-R&B sound whilst the artist holds her lyricism close to her heart with a more introspective pen. Reaching the halfway point with title-track ‘WHOLESOME GOODY’, the Ipon produced track leans you in with it’s distorted, haunting harmonies before bringing in fast-paced drums and Elheist’s relentless yet ever-changing flow.

Heading into the EP’s lead single ‘TEASR’ released last year, the track brings contrasting distorted and hollow drums, creating intriguing textures for the artist to jump around with her off-the-cuff delivery. Moving into the penultimate track of the project, ‘BRING IT HOME’ holds heavy production to her soft vocals and delicate melodies, creating a captivating and stand alone sound.

Wrapping up this genre-defying debut, ‘W.A.T.C’ the co-produced track from Hlmnsra and Elheist herself, creates a vast atmosphere with pockets of detail scattered throughout, keeping you on your toes before the production kicks in for the hook. Overall, this debut acts as a perfect introduction to all of the sides of Elheist’s musicality, proving her adaptability and forward-thinking artistry.
