Cigarette Stories

The first track from new duo Fieves is finally here, made up of the immensely talented wordsmith Finnerz, and producer Yves Jones

After the success of their initial drum and bass/UK hip hop hybrid collaboration, ‘Shallow’, it was inevitable we’d hear more from them this year.

It was announced on Instagram that the talented pair would officially link up as Fieves on the 14th February, with plans to become a ‘multi-genre duo with a focus on Hip-Hop, UK Garage and Liquid Drum & Bass’. Yves Jones, the Manchester based producer/DJ specialises in these genres, whilst Finnerz provides the bars.

On Instagram, they further added ‘Fieves derives from the word ‘Thieves’ and is a combination of both our names. We are all about who you choose to be behind the mask, because behind that maks you get to choose the story.’

We’ve had our eyes set on self-procclaimed ‘rapproducineer’ Finnerz for a couple of months now, after hearing his dreamy, bittersweet track ‘WHAT DID I DO?’, and sharing our thoughts on the track. He continues to impress, this time as one half of the genre-fusing duo.

It’s a darker beat than what we’ve heard Finnerz over before. As the beat begins it feels like we’re going to be bombarded with the heavy New York braggadocio of a Pro Era member, but soon enough the Kent emcee begins his verse, wearing his emotions on his sleeve with opening line ‘Cigarette stories, life’s so boring, still adoring nights when we’d see it through to morning’. The storyteller shows off his knack for breath control and intricate rhyme schemes as the beat progresses.

Much like ‘WHAT DID I DO?’, the instrumental is given space to breathe, the production never takes a backseat to Finnerz’s song-writing, and their chemistry is off the charts following on from ‘Shallow’.

Finnerz also showed off his engineering chops late last year with the fantastic track ‘Lost Pt. 1’ by Protagonist.

This duo is gonna be unmissable in 2022, so keep them on your radar as we inevitably hear more hard tunes like this one.

A testament to the talent coming out of Manchester once again. Listen to the track below.
