Beggie Beggie

One of world music’s fastest risers, Arya Starr consolidates her luxurious, innovative and intricate sound with kaleidoscopic visuals for Beggie Beggie, a fan favourite from her 2021 debut album 19 & Dangerous.

A youthful, charismatic and powerful voice who cocooned last year, Starr’s critically lauded 19 & Dangerous was a significant step for both her and the Afropop genre to mainstream, worldwide success. Beggie Beggie sees a distinct thematic direction compared to much of the album, focusing in on a more vulnerable side of her psyche with declarations of lust and love rather than themes of power and self-confidence. Arya’s softly sung vocals are merged with minimalist traditional African grooves and wistful guitar chords. The tasty feature of Ckay is the perfect amuse-bouche for Arya’s stunning hook and narrative excellence.

With direction from the King of visual vibrance Director K, the accompanying video sees Arya pay homage to the ongoing cultural renaissance in Nigeria. Speaking on the visuals, Arya commented:

Old Nollywood has had some of the biggest impact on Gen-Z fashion and style. I thought it would be fun and beautiful to re-create that era and its influence on pop culture as a whole. ‘Beggie Beggie’ is not just a sad song, it’s about a young woman seeing things for what they are.

As we wait in anticipation for her follow up to last year’s peerless body of work, it becomes more and more apparent that Arya Starr is one of the most important names in Gen Z music. Take in the gorgeous visuals now.
