Dingaling
The free-spirited green queen of ‘psychedelic R&B’ Greentea Peng casts another spell on our ears in an ode to ‘the girl of her dreams’ with transcendent offering ‘Dingaling’.
Greentea Peng has come along way from the days of working on a yoga retreat and having an ‘oh sod it’ moment to get up to cover a Lilly Allen/Amy Winehouse number (she wasn’t too sure which one due to the dutch courage) at a beachside bar in Tulum, Mexico - sparking her fascinating journey to stardom. The unapologetic talent is outright driving an R&B renaissance before our eyes with an unorthodox soundscape that comprises of goosebump inducing instrumentals courtesy of backing band 'The Seng Family’ and of course her very own hallucinatory vocals.
The SE born singer songwriter drifts across a healing Earbuds and ‘Seng Seng’ rhythm set at 432 Hz riddled with vintage synths and shakers that cast a feeling of reminiscence over us, as the enlightened Neo-soul singer breaks out into a sweet sounding introspective conversation with herself and her audience - but also making it clear that it’s still bun babylon: ‘bun your satellites/blocking out our light/this is the holy fight’. The opening ‘why is it so rotten/my people must have forgotten’ hook sets the pace but Greentea truly ceases our attention after the distorted breakdown with a trans educing chorus expressing her infatuation for an ‘African queen’ that makes her heart go ‘dingaling’.
The meditative soundscape is twinned with an ABOVEGROUND film embodying Greentea’s radiant energy as the two guide us through a hazy day of filming through the gems of London from dawn till dusk. In Greentea fashion you can see the vibrant personality styled in her illustrious ‘ragamuffin’ attire: from a khaki jacket, von dutch print denim and a western hat as she sips on a slushy with a touch of Wrey and all his Nephews - to an eye-catching green jacket, bold golden hoops and of course one of her famed hats as she breaks off into the chorus on a bed of blossoms.
This medicinal offering is not only a nod to Blak Twang’s ‘So rotten’ and 2Face’s ‘African Queen’ from Peng’s times lapping up Channel U as a youth but also a window into her highly anticipated debut album ‘Man Made’ set to drop 04/06.
