Daniel Jelani Sie-Blackman consistently binds silky R&B/hip-hop grooves with powerful lyricism and word flow. His new single ‘Pattern’ is no exception.

This track is a refreshing take on dancehall with a stuttered, yet energetic instrumental. Jelani’s unique voice has always peaked listeners attention, delivering deceptively whimsical wordplay beneath a gravelly, deep tone. On ‘Pattern’, Jelani extends his vocal repertoire to create floaty melodies that are mirrored by subtle yet serene strings. The distant guitars and vocal samples are a delicate touch to what is a heavy groove throughout. Jelani’s versatility when it comes to song writing and soundscapes has been evident for years now.

Following his deep discography dating back to 2014, his early collaborations with musical pioneers (such as the ambient emperor Brian Eno) reflect his spark of potential that continues to resonate today. We’re yet to have received a full-length studio album from Jelani. However, I think something truly extraordinary is on its way.
