Starts with a Text
One of West London’s most organic soundscapes Bawo is back with yet another bountiful rhythm in ‘Starts with a Text’ that’s sure to make a soothing addition to that daily rotation.
Bawo lays it all out in ‘Starts with a Text’, letting us into his dubious thoughts as he ventures into figuring out the vibes between himself and a potential new romance. The pensive lyricist hovers through a cloudy Daniel Ness & Madeleine Jones production comprising of thumbing bass and whimsical keys as he talks us through that initial 21 questions stage, getting to know all the intrinsic aspects of a fresh amorous encounter, yet still holding off from fessing up completely. Bawo goes on to list a number of things that he’s taken aback by: ‘air force ones you’re a gem/she makes a fuss about me and I like it’ to things that throw him off a bit: ‘heard where I hang/swerving that shit, not again’. The mellow mannered listing guides us into that distinctly consoling voice of his as he transcends into a chain of goosebump inducing harmonies as he seems to toy with the thought of whether the feelings are actually reciprocated between the two.
With yet another banger set in stone within the discography, Bawo seems to only release tracks set at a particular calibre - a stupidly high one. The likes of his feel-good Smilk, pensive ‘Waiting Room’ and of course the 2020 summer anthem ‘Brasileiro’ continue to make it crystal clear why Bawo seems to be cut from a completely different cloth when it comes to this emerging UK scene. Whether it be from: his hand in instrumental choice, topic of discussion, cadence or his ability to step out of his comfort zone. At this point it just seems like anything the man touches turns to gold, which is another reason why many (myself included) are waiting for this breath of fresh air to be taken in as it deserves to be.
