Track of the Week: after the love

It feels impossible not to salivate at soul’s next superstar Kyra’s return after the love, released via Songular’s new label Other Projects.

The West London based singer/songwriter rose to acclaim with her velvety debut body of work Xanadu back in 2020, but has since then not released any solo material. Finally back to stake her claim within the Neo-soul landscape, Kyra’s return is rich to its smokey core, pipping hot and oozing emotion.

Show-stopping strings introduce us to the reverent instrumental palette that is driven forward by smooth bass, textured harmonies and subtle saxophone inflections. Kyra delivers a mouth-watering vocal performance, deep-seated in expression and dripping in nuance, spinning a web of relatability though her vivid and eloquent love-struck lyricism.

Accompanying the auditorial blissfulness is an equally sublime visual, directed by Sheena Brobbey and starring none other than UK raps’ man of the hour, Knucks. Seamlessly slotting within Kyra’s sonic aesthetic, the sensual depiction of love and relationships is poignant, powerful and passionate.

Speaking on the single, Kyra profoundly commented:

I wrote this song about the seasons of a relationship and the transition of two people who are together but feel alone. We often talk about being in love, but what about after the love? When love becomes a choice rather than a feeling, and navigating that space of the in between, it ultimately means growing together or growing apart.
