Track of the Week: Blame Brexit

UK rap icon Potter Payper enters the year in rip roaringly righteous fashion, unveiling the topical, ominous and darkly cinematic number ‘Blame Brexit’.

An artist truly in his own lane, Potter’s journey to the point has been as absorbing as any in rap. From strife, poverty and drugs, the rapper has used his past and present anguish as the truest form of expressionism. Rather than glorifying the life like many of his drill counterparts, Potter has always delved beyond simple talk of violence, money and power, and into the pain and difficulties has come from the lifestyle. His latest album, ’21’s Thanks For Waiting, is a condensed, layered and artful project that rose his stock to amongst the biggest in UK rap. After a fairly quiet ’22, Potter’s message is clear with this new cut - this year is destined to be his.

‘Blame Brexit’ is a startlingly impactful track that sees Potter in a mood of reflection, casting his eye upon a troubled past and pondering on his current situation. The instrumental is sparse and grimy, with the repetitive synth the perfect sonic equivalent to the hard-hitting realism of Potter’s lyrics. The dark tone of the cut is mirrored miraculously well with the gothic visuals that aim to highlight the unflinching darkness in which Potter struggled to shine through from, as well as obtaining a deeper message on our unsettling society.
