Is It Autumn Already?

The Midlands best kept secret, Chartreuse somehow evaluate their craft even higher on flawless new EP ‘Is It Autumn Already?

Borrowing from a vast array of styles, with the influence of soul, R&B, jazz, indie, classical and art rock all apparent, Chartreuse champion impeccable musicianship and clarity of expression, with both vocalists Hattie and Mike upholding emotional potency and confounding conceptualism throughout their work.

The Black Country four-piece have developed a loyal, and infatuated, fan base through two stunning EP’s. 2019’s debut ‘Even Free Money Doesn’t Get Me Out Of Bed’ was a seamlessly striking introduction to the band’s gorgeous sound, with cuts like ‘Three Days’ and ‘Midnight Oil’ highlighting the broad range of sonic ideas and lyrical gusto available in their repertoire. Their 2020 sophomore follow up ‘Keep Checking Up On Me’ showcased a more dynamic and experimental side to their sound, with heavier production and the infusion of electronica a compelling stylistic progression.

‘Is It Autumn Already’ seemingly, and effortlessly, embodies and amalgamates the two sub-sounds from Chartreuse’s previous bodies of work. The EP is plagued with wandering amazement; so vital and powerful in its harmonies, lyrical imagery and succulent production.

Stand out efforts on the six-pronged EP include the show-stopping single ‘Only You’, with its exquisite rhythmic variation, grandiose colour-laden instrumentation, and vocals that cut through ones soul like a tenderly cooked eight-ounce. Another towering moment is the previously unheard track ‘Deep Fat’, which is a subtle, humble and introspective song full of dazzling narration and richly textured instrumentation.

I love this EP, and I love this band. I’ve seen Chartreuse live twice, and both times my jaw has dropped with the rawness of their music; the nuance, emotion and identity. I’m going to see them again in Birmingham on Friday 3rd December, and I’d advise you to join me. Get these guys on your radar.
